Uglies by: Scott Westerfeld
Uglies is a book about how in the future, when you turn 16 you get a surgery to be "pretty." You get to move to a new city and your only job is to have fun. Tally Youngblood's 16th birthday is coming up and she can't wait. While she is sneaking into the city though she meets another ugly named Shay. They have the same birthday and they become friends. Shay is constantly arguing with Tally about whether the pretty surgery is such a great thing though. On the night before their birthday Shay says she is going to a secret place called the Smoke where no one gets the surgery. Tally is surprised but rejects the offer to go with Shay. Shay leaves a note with Tally that only she would understand which tells her how to find Shay so Tally can find her if she decides to. The next day when Tally is on the bus to get the surgery "Special Circumstances" stops her and tells her to go find this secret town and report back the location. If she doesn't, she won't ever become a pretty. Will Tally betray her friend or live the life she's dreamed of?
Review
Uglies is a really good book and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys books about the future and anyone who likes adventure books. This book is the first out of a series of four.
